A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, typically made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of a natural tooth. Once healed to your bone, it acts as an anchor that a dental crown can be placed on.
If you would like more information about dental implants in general, please click HERE.
Almost all patients are candidates for dental implants. Some patients have been told previously that they cannot have dental implants and we find most times this is no longer true. The major reason people have been told this is because they don't have enough bone. But improvements in research allow most cases of bone loss to be repaired and implant placement feasible for nearly all patients. Despite this, sometimes the bone loss is still too severe so it is best to have a thorough examination to assess your situation.
Some people have concerns or fears over dental implant treatment because they have heard stories from friends who have had bad experiences. Dr. Nicolucci and his team have extensive expertise with dental implants having placed over 15000 using a variety of different systems. In addition, they offer a lifetime warranty on their implants if proper maintenance has been followed. They also are committed to using the most up-to-date and tested techniques and equipment to ensure the best outcome for each patient.
Prior to any treatment, Dr. Nicolucci and his team will conduct a thorough examination and consultation. All appropriate treatment options, risks, and benefits will be discussed. Our doctors are committed to helping our patients have a good understanding of their situation so they can make an informed decision on which treatment is right for them.
After carefully deciding how best to treat each patient, dental implant procedures are carried out in our office under local anesthetic. Patient comfort is very important to us and we make sure that our patients remain comfortable throughout treatment. The procedures are generally under an hour and patients are often surprised at how easy the treatment was. For implant placement, there is no need for someone to accompany patients although we always welcome friends and family to accompany our patients and even sit in on the procedure if they wish. After the treatment is complete, our patients can drive home and perform their regular daily routines.
For patients who have no teeth in one or both jaws or for patients who have teeth but are losing them, it is possible to have a new set of upper and/or lower teeth made in a single appointment. This procedure involves removing the remaining teeth from the top or bottom jaw, placing implants, and immediately attaching a set of fixed teeth to the implants. This treatment is an excellent alternative for patients who already wear a denture or for patients who are losing their teeth and don't want to wear a denture. Because it only takes a single appointment to complete, patients can look forward to enjoying a light meal immediately after the procedure.
Dental implants are currently the gold standard for tooth replacement. They look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime with proper care. Dental Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss that allows you to regain a natural-looking and healthy smile. Like natural teeth, implants stimulate the jaw and stop bone loss. The benefits are lifelong: firm and safe support for your teeth and prevention of further bone loss.
If you have any further questions about how dental implants can improve your quality of life, please feel free to speak with Dr. Nicolucci or one of their team members today.

THE "GOLD" STANDARD
Many patients have one or more areas of significant gum recession. The cause of these recessions may be due to “thin” gums and aggressive tooth brushing. These areas are often associated with very thin remaining gum tissue that may be more at risk for further recession. The affected areas may have exposed roots that are very sensitive and may be a cosmetic concern.
The Gum Grafting procedure is carried out in our periodontal office and often with less local anesthetic than required for a filling. A small amount of tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth and sutured to the receded area. The tissues then heals the receded area forming into your own tissues but healthier and stronger.
Creating a great looking smile is in large part dependent on the shape of the gum tissues. In some cases, unbalanced or excess gum tissues can be reshaped to create a more cosmetically pleasing appearance. A similar cosmetic problem can be encountered if one or more teeth are too short.
The procedure to correct these cosmetic problems is minor and stitches are not necessary. The gums are removed to make them balanced and display the teeth with a better esthetic appearance. The procedure can be thought of as a manicure for the gums.
There are other situations where instead of the need to remove gum tissue, there is a need for more gum tissue. This can be addressed with “Gum Grafting” (see above).
Crown lengthening procedures remove some tissue to expose more of the ‘crown’ of your tooth. There are several situations where crown lengthening is necessary. The most common is when there is decay or a fracture that is too far below the gum.
The crown lengthening will expose the decay or crack to allow a new crown to properly extend over the area where the decay or fracture occurred. If new crowns or veneers are planned by your dentist, then this procedure sets the stage to allow for a more natural and beautiful smile. This procedure is carried out in our office using local anesthetic just like when having a dental filling.
Periodontal Disease that is more advanced results in significant amounts of residual subgingival (under the gum) plaque and calculus (tartar) deposits. It will also cause bone resorption and deeper pockets. We usually try to treat these areas with deep cleanings, but in specific situations or when the deep cleanings are not helping to control the disease, flap surgery may be indicated.
Flap surgery is an easy procedure carried out in our office with local anesthetic much like a dental filling. The gums in the affected area are slightly folded open (like the flap of an envelope). This allows the visibility necessary to access the problem areas to be treated. Theses areas are then throughly cleaned. Sometimes the treatment involves adjustments to the tooth or the bone, and sometimes it involves regeneration to grow back lost bone or tissues. After successful treatment, the gums are folded back and often some sutures are placed.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two major forms of gum disease. Gingivitis is an infection of the gums, but when the infection moves from the gums down into the bones around the teeth, we call it periodontitis.
Professional cleanings involve an evaluation of your teeth, gums and surrounding tissues, a thorough cleaning, and a review of your oral hygiene. Although most patients are comfortable, some patients may have sensitive teeth and require some local anesthetic to ensure they are comfortable.
Regular professional cleanings along with good oral hygiene help stop the formation of gum diseases. Studies have shown that patients who receive regular professional care have a significantly lower chance to lose their teeth. Our office will evaluate your case and customize an interval and length for each appointment depending on your individual needs.
For some patients with deep gum pockets and/or more extensive subgingival (under the gum line) deposits of calculus(tartar), there may be need for a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to go below the gum line and treat the tooth root. This treatment may take longer than regular cleanings and may require local anesthetic. In some cases, antibiotics or antibacterial rinses will also be prescribed to help treat your case.
When required, deep cleanings are one of the most important treatments to achieve and maintain periodontal stability. The procedure removes plaque and calculus (tartar), the primary causes of periodontal disease, below the gum line where it sits near the jaw bone and can cause tooth loss.
After a deep cleaning is completed, the doctor will typically re-evaluate your case 1 to 3 months after to see how your tissues are healing. It is important to remember that regular professional cleanings are needed to maintain any benefits that a deep cleaning may provide.
